Best Intentions

Started with the best of intentions
This will not be a clinical blog or article, but an entry made to get my feet wet again while making second attempt at staying in touch using this media format. I started this blog with the intention of sharing clinical knowledge but dropped the ball after my first admission.
After I posted the article on Sirtuins my partner and I began investigating the possibility of expanding and opening another practice. We spent time researching (hence the no new articles) and money developing a plan for another spot. After plenty of discussions and meetings, we have decided to focus our attention on our original clinic, Agape. This next month is an exciting one. Agape is receiving a face-lift, and we are also in the process of acquiring a ton of new equipment (Graston, and different electrotherapies). Lastly, we have decided to go paperless. I don’t like the idea of having to build or rent office space for the sole purpose of keeping files. Practice software is expensive and there are significant differences in quality of products, as such we have been spending a lot of time researching the different EMRs (Electronic Medical Records).
I will be posting clinical articles shortly

Anti-aging (raising Sirtuins enzymes)

This is the first installment of many anti-aging articles to come in the near future. Due to patient interest and need, our practice has begun to embark into this very promising field of health care. Fundamentally, it is more than vanity it is holistic healthcare.

Dr. Mark Houstan stated “A discovery of a class of enzymes called Sirtuins is the greatest medical breakthrough in the last hundred years”. He further elaborates by stating we not only have the ability to affect the aging process but also the quality of aging and quality of life, by reducing the amount of diseases and conditions which are commonly associated with the aging process.

Sirtuins are a class of enzymes intimately involved in the aging process, as their numbers and activity is increased the aging process becomes less pronounced. Sirtuins protect and help support injured cells and delay cellular death. More specifically Sirtuins help the on the cellular level by:

  • Gene Silencing (a term relating to a form of gene regulation)
  • DNA repair
  • Increased life span
  • Increased cell survival
  • Increase in energy metabolism
  • Helps the cells recover from environmental stressors

What can we do to increase the levels of this enzyme class? Clinical studies have shown an increase in Sirtuins with supplementation with Resveratrol. Animal studies have shown an increase in life span by 31% with Resveratrol supplementation. Resveratrol is a compound found in red wine.  However, proposed therapeutic levels are much higher than what a glass, bottle, case, or even a wine cellar offer.  Clinicians admit they have not yet determined the optimal amount of Resveratrol; the studies so far have used approximately 22mg per kilogram. Based on this ratio Joe Buishas, LDN, CCN recommends taking a person’s body weight and adding a 0 at the end this yields a rough estimate of the amount of Resveratrol needed. For instance a person who weighs 150 pounds would take about 1500mg per day.

As with any supplement weather vitamin or herb quality is key. Many of you know about supplements and vitamins which are sold but not useful or worse even dangerous. Vitamin D has gotten a lot of publicity lately as such I’ll use it as an example. Vitamin D3 is the form of Vitamin D which is active and utilized by your body; however, many companies sell Vitamin D2 or fortify their products with Vitamin D2 which is essentially useless. Resveratrol is similar, their exist a cis and a trans from. The trans form is the form we want, it’s the biologically active form.

As always I appreciate and encourage your feedback, questions and comments. If you have a topic you’d like to learn about please ask, I will answer as time allows.

Hope all is well, peace.

Hello world!

Starting to look like a great weekend! We met with a publisher of a local health magazine yesterday, and we are going to start contributing articles shortly. Our first article will be related to MMA fighters and soft tissue injury. Due date is July 5, I will post the article when it is finished. Today we meet with a professional photographer from Pet’ographique. She is going to take pictures of us and our dog’s/bird for the practice.

Hope all is well, peace.
